I thought on most PCs these days the Windows Firewall was enabled by default out of the box? It seemed that way on the last couple of PCs that I bought. So that’s decreased the risk somewhat, but of course it’s a good idea to check, like Leo says!
Also, some spyware programs are confusing because they flag so many things as “spyware”, even cookies from certain websites. (For the uninitiated, people have varying opinions about cookies but it’s really misleading for programs to lump them in with “spyware”, a category which includes malicious software that can bog your browser down with pop-up windows and turn it into an unwitting spam-bot.) They’ll even turn up lots of alleged “spyware” on a clean machine direct from the store. Try to find an anti-spyware program that limits its focus to things that actually bog down your machine or take it over for nefarious purposes, not a program that goes crazy over every unrecognized cookie. I don’t know much about which anti-spyware programs work best for that purpose though.
